American Skin

Shot 41 times by 4 policemen when your unarmed? Sounds like something that would happen in Iraq or some other dodgy place. But your wrong, it did not happen in a dodgy country where the police are totally corrupt. This happened in New York City, US.

In the early morning of February 1999 4 policemen were out on patrol like every other morning. They saw a black man outside a house and told him they were NYPD and could he please show his hands. Since Diallo has a foreign background and is black and recently came to New York he does not really understand who there civil dressed guys are and what they want (the police were not in uniforms). He is just minding his own business near his own house. When Diallo does not respond to the police request to stop and show his hands the police become high alert and nervous. Diallo is still not very sure what is going on and when he reaches for his wallet to take out his ID the police open fire and Diallo is hit 41 times with his wallet in his hand.

What does this story teach us? Communication and misunderstanding. When you come from example Finland to a place like China you do not understand the language, nor do you understand how the system works here. This was a workshop in psychology by a Swedish consulting group from Lund which is specialized in training Executives and Managers who go working abroad. How to adapt to a new environment and try to understand the situation from the other peoples perspective.
