Warsaw - City of ruins

Took a extended weekend trip with Henkka to Poland leaving Friday morning 8.00 from Helsinki to Warsaw. The plane was in time! So unusual! All planes in China are late like 95% of the time...The first day in Warsaw we strolled around the downtown and went to some museums.

Stayed at the Westin hotel but the service wasn't really 5 starts for certain reasons. Coolest thing about this hotel was the elevator, REALLY and made of glass (see picture)

1. No toothbrushes or shavers in the toilet without calling and asking for them
2.Sauna closed at 22 already
3.They told us they would rent and fix us up with a car and call back when it would be done. They they never called and never fixed the car. Last time I stay in Warsaw's Westin.

Warsaw was bombed to the ground up to 90% in the Second World War by the Germans...No other city has ever been destroyed this to the ground.

It's amazing how they have build up everything to it's original form using drawings and maps. It looks like a replica of a old town, something "Walt Disney" about the whole town somehow. It looks old but you know it's not. "Fake" in a way...

Central Square with the old castle to the right side
All below is rebuilt in 1950s...

The protecting mermaid, much like the one in Denmark but with a sword and shield to protect the city
Candles keep burning for all that fell long ago
The city gates that never really had any use for the locals. The Swedish invaders used it to their own advantage to fend off the local Polish people back in the days. This is also rebuilt after the war.
Mari Curie was born and lived right here. Later moved to France. She won 2 noble prices for physics and chemistry.
 The rebuild church 1979
Our guide. Was really good and he really only saw positive things with the invasions. Some of the things he said would probably have pist off someone:

- "If it was not for the destroyed city we would never have one of Europe's highest towers"

- "I'm quite happy the Swedes stole and looted our treasures back in the day because 2 of their ships sank and now we can retrieve the goods 200 years later. And the rest of the goods can be seen in Stockholm museum. If it was not for them they would probably have been destroyed during the war."
 Zodiac clock
For the child soldiers who helped the resistant movement
Tomb of the unknown soldiers that died in 1918-1920. There were some high level people visiting it this day because the place was swarming with police and military.

A beer was walking around in old town :):)

In every restaurant they had dumplings! I ask the waiter what dumplings are. She said "well it's one of Polands famous dishes....
Eeeh, no, it's not. Dumplings comes from China! I never seen dumplings served anywhere else in western restaurants and then claiming that they are their food...The things inside were totally different than the chinese and also a lot more tastier. But still, dumplings originate from China.
Random shot. Someone had left a naked little Barbie doll by a trash container?

Warsaw is located by the Wisla river that runs through the city. By the river they put up a war memorial which is mentioned in all tourist maps.
By the river they also have Poland's biggest stadium. The European Football championship was played right HERE this year.

We went to see the Uprising Museum which is about the movement who fought against the Germans who had occupied the city and put the jews to live in Ghettos and restricting daily life. If you check online this museum has the highest ranking in Warsaw. Personally I think the war museum was better and had more extensive material.
People were hiding in the sewers. Small, dark and full of rats
Anti German movement            Pro Soviet - Poland was communistic after the war

Customized Chevrolet...Armor +9
Poland was diveided into German and Soviet sides

The cafe at the Uprising museum was very retro
The war museum had everything about the wars in Poland for the last 800 years. So much weapons, clothes, materials etc. Amazing. So far the most impressive war museum I have ever been to.
Old U.S tank and Soviet choppers

Oldschool war. Each "suit" is around 70kg. Could not run too much with one
Like a Sir! This is the most awesome armor I have ever seen. Space for ze mustache!
Found some street art while walking around, was really cool spray graffiti!!!

In the center of the city Soviet Union build the tower Science and Cutlure. It is Polands highest tower and the 3rd tallest building in Europe. Almost exactly as high as the bungee jump I did in Macao a few weeks ago up to 233 meters.

Views from the tower

In the center of the city they have a huge park with lots of old buildings with art inside. They also some kind of chinese theme for today with loads of red lanterns and chinese figurines. Nowadays it seems that where ever you go there is always something chinese about the place in shows, food, happenings, expos, travel fairs etc. Guess I chose the right place to move to!

Sun is setting...
